Janacek : The Makropoulos Case

Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Conductor
Ivo van Hove, production
Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra
Choir of the Nederlandse Opera

De Volkskrant May 22, 2009
A Makropoulos with Love for Detail

“It is the first time Nézet-Séguin has the opportunity to demonstrate his opera skills in the Netherlands. And skilful he is, at least when he conducts Janacek. Nézet-Séguin has exactly the love for detail that is so essential to this music. But he is also capable of forging the sparse motives and often curiously draped harmonies together, and then alternates between pushing the whole forward and letting it flow. And he can provide the opera's many, sometimes prosaic dialogues with a passionate undercurrent, and add a comic accent here and there.”

The Makropoulos Case Zings, Grates and Growls

“Yannick Nézet-Séguin, the Music Director of the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, makes his debut in the Muziektheater. The ensemble created a solemn and solid base for the singers.”

Cheryl Barker is a Radiant Focal Point in Makropoulos

“Yannick Nézet-Séguin, who has been the Music Director of the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra since the beginning of this season, made his debut with DNO. And what a debut it was! Under him, the unrelenting chain of monologues, dialogues and histories became exciting metamorphoses of instrumental colors, moods, and passionate expressions.”

Even More Intense Makropoulos

“In the Muziektheater, Nézet-Séguin and his Rotterdam orchestra gave an impressive performance of The Makropoulos Case. They brought out all the different expressions in Janacek's difficult, collage-like score. Nézet-Séguin filled the music with a constant stream of life, lyricism, drama and melancholic tragedy.”

Confronting Opera by Janacek

“In the pit, the Rotterdam Philharmonic proves to be a driven Janacek-orchestra.”
