Yannick Nézet-Séguin invited to conduct at the Salzburg Festival, Summer 2008

Yannick Nézet-Séguin will conduct 9 performances of Gounod's opera Roméo et Juliette, between 2nd and 25th of August 2008; he will also conduct Mozart's Mass in C minor K. 427 on August 21st.

This opera takes its origin in William Shakespeare's tragedy Roméo et Juliette. The title roles are held by two stars, tenor Rollando Villazon and soprano Anna Nebrebko. Presented at Felsenreitschule of Salzburg, this French opera gathers a cast of twelve soloists; the chorus is virtually identical to Chorus of the Vienna Staatsoper and has performed under the direction of the most famous conductors in the world like Toscanini, Furtwängler, von Karajan and Giulini, to name just a few of them. The orchestra is the Mozarteum Orchester Salzburg which participates every year to the Festival and offers furthermore a Mozart Week during the Festival.

Mozart's Mass in C minor K. 427 is a piece for 4 soloists, large chorus and orchestra; it will be presented in the magnificent St-Peter's Abbey of Salzburg. Mozart wrote this strong work as he was 27. The Great Mass was played for the first time immediately afterwards in Salzburg in 1883. Mozart conducted himself and gave the role of first soprano to his wife Constance to whom the work was dedicated. The Great Mass is considered as an absolute masterpiece most of all because of its gigantic architecture, where different styles are perfectly integrated in respect of Mozart's own style, and also because of the emotion the Great Mass produces through so many years. This masterpiece is the summit of the sacred music from Mozart; it is also known as the central part of the tryptic with Bach's Mass in G and Beethoven's Missa Solemnis. The work stayed unachieved by Mozart. The version presented in Salzburg Festival 2008 has been reconstructed and completed by Helmut Eder. The artists: four reknowned soloists, the Salzburg Bach Choir and the Mozarteum Orchester Salzburg.

Not only adding a feather on Yannick Nézet-Séguin's famous way, this invitation to conduct during the Salzburg Festival will bring the young maestro (32) to realise one of his most impossible dreams.
