Yannick Nézet-Séguin appointed Principal
Guest Conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra, beginning at the start
of their 2008-2009 season.
In the 2007/08 season, the London Philharmonic Orchestra celebrates
its seventy-fifth birthday. Today the London Philharmonic Orchestra
is recognised as one of the world's great orchestras. Since its
foundation, the ensemble's Principal Conductorship has been passed
from one celebrated musician to another, among them Bernard Haitink,
Sir Georg Solti, Kurt Masur, etc. In addition to those mentioned
above, Daniel Barenboim, Leonard Bernstein, Eugen Jochum et Carlo
Maria Giulini were invited to conduct the LPO. Since Septembre
2007, the LPO is conducted by Vladimir Jurowski. Resident at both
the Royal Festival Hall and Glyndebourne Festival Opera, the London
Philharmonic Orchestra has long been embraced by the recording,
broadcasting and film industries. It enjoys strong relationships
with major record labels.
The 32-year-old French Canadian’s appointment follows his
new position of Music Director of the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra
and his Artistic Direction of the Orchestre Métropolitain
du Grand Montréal.
Unanimous and instantaneous respect from orchestral musicians,
a formidable technique and a sense of calm, communicative authority
have all been cited as reasons for his success, and have prompted
his swift appointments at both the Rotterdam and London Philharmonic
Orchestras.
Timothy Walker, Chief Executive and Artistic Director of the London
Philharmonic Orchestra said today: “Many who witnessed Yannick’s
impressive debut with the London Philharmonic Orchestra will understand
the motivation for this appointment. Taking outstanding musicality,
knowledge and technique as a given Yannick’s brilliance lies
in his ability to move players to exceptional performance and to
communicate a strength and vitality of vision to the listener that
is totally engrossing”.
This is an immense honor and a great challenge for Yannick Nézet-Séguin
who will hold functions of direction concurrently nearby three
orchestras. His nomination in London, neither his nomination in
Rotterdam, do not compromise his engagement towards his Orchestre
Métropolitain who trusted him since September 2000 and with
whom he has commitment until 2010 and over.
Congratulations Yannick!
